Window Dressings in Rock

October 2013

Back in 2013, we completed a project in the beautiful coastal town of Rock in Daymer Bay, Cornwall.

The refurbished updated cottage had so much character, it was pleasing when the client wanted to achieve a simple ‘New England’, ‘Country Cottage’ theme throughout the property. The chicken fabric, ‘Rare Breeds’, from GP & J Baker chosen for the kitchen/dining room windows, was a favourite for the client to bring some fun into the hub of the house.  A roman blind and curtains dressed the windows alongside a piped window seat and scatter cushions, using the combination of colours and textures.

A striking, embroidered fabric from GP & J Baker was perfect for the Hallway, it works so well with the character of the uneven stairs and the traditional banister – using a deep pencil pleat header and a high quality lining created a rich and full drape.  For the roman blind we wanted to feature one of the smaller colours in the curtains and in the end we decided on the green, which was a silk effect fabric by Wemyss

A neutral colour paint was used throughout the house with a feature colour wall for the bedrooms behind the headboards, so these are the colours that we focused on when choosing the different fabrics lovely hints of blues, greens and yellow!  Roman Blinds work really well in small windows in small rooms! Less fabric saves space and by adding more pockets into our romans they pull up high in the reveals therefore not blocking the light. Blackout bonded interlining gives body and richness to the fabrics and pleats of our blinds.

And we nearly always add a micro pelmet over our romans as they visually appear to be part of the room and are a simple but effective finishing touch.

The living room was bare and lifeless until two pairs of stunning and an interlined roman blind were fitted.  We chose Linwood Fabrics aptly titled ‘New England’ weaves for the understated style of the stripe and check.  The curtains hung at each window with an elegant soft drape that brought a subtle warmth and richness to the room.  All poles are by Byron & Byron, in washed painted finish – complementing the interiors in appearance.  Our client said he loved cushions, so we made lots of them for the sofas and chairs, creating a truly comfortable, cosy environment to relax and enjoy!
